Earn an Additional Graduate Certificate in SWD
BROOKLYN COLLEGE
If you are considering an additional teaching certificate, or would like to take meaningful graduate courses at a very reasonable cost, consider our 12 credit Graduate Certificate in Teaching Students with Disabilities. This program consists of four 3 credit courses that will be completed in one school year. You must take all four courses to become certified in Special Education, but may take the courses individually if seeking grad credit for salary advancement. Each course meets online for 8 sessions, and the remaining required hours will consist of independent research and assignments.
We are seeking to form a cohort of at least 20 people so that we can begin in October of 2024 and complete all four courses by May of 2025. Please read the course descriptions, and most importantly, examine the requirements by clicking on this:

CBSE 7674 Students with Special Needs
Dates: Tuesdays, (10/8 - 11/26/24) 10/8, 10/15,10/22,10/29,11/5,11/12,11/19,11/26/24 Time: 4:00 to 8:00 PM

This is the first of 4 courses leading to the additional certificate in SWD, but courses may be taken individually
for graduate credit. Courses do NOT have to be taken in sequence.
This course focuses on the investigation of the developmental nature, causes, and characteristics of young children and students with special needs, including giftedness. Implications for classroom teachers and other professionals in the areas of interpersonal interactions, interagency collaboration, and instruction will be examined. The historical, social and legal foundations and politics of special education will be discussed, as well as theories of learning and development, and the influence of gender, class, language, sexuality, and race/ethnicity on the construction of disability, as interpreted within and across cultures. NOTE: Conferences and field experiences are determined by the instructor of record.

CBSE 7676T Learning Environments for Students with Special Needs

This is the second of 4 courses leading to the additional certificate in SWD, but courses may be taken individually for graduate credit. Courses do NOT have to be taken in sequence. NOTE: THIS COURSE YIELDS 3 GRAD CREDITS IN 3 WEEKS.
This course focuses on various approaches to the design, management, and evaluation of optimal learning environments. Participants will explore methods, including behavior management, crisis intervention, group process, positive social interaction skills, and peer mediation. Case studies in diverse settings will be examined as a basis for analysis, discussion, and interpretation of behavior within and across cultures. Participants will develop a reflective approach to teaching and problem solving.

CBSE 7677T Curriculum Modifications for Teaching Students with Special Needs

This is the third of 4 courses leading to the additional certificate in SWD, but courses may be taken individually for graduate credit. Courses do NOT have to be taken in sequence.
This course focuses on adaptation of the general education curriculum for teaching students with a range of special needs, including giftedness and English Language Learners. Participants will explore principles, rationale, and research-validated methods of instruction and assessment of special populations in a variety of settings, and across all content areas and life skills. Emphasis will be placed upon the NYS Learning Standards and the educational needs of students with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

CBSE 7678T Educational Assessment of Young Children and Students with Special Needs
45 hours; 3 grad credits

This is the fourth of 4 courses leading to the additional certificate in SWD, but courses may be taken individually
for graduate credit. Courses do NOT have to be taken in sequence.
This course focuses on the critical use of formal and informal strategies for the assessment and evaluation of the cognitive, behavioral, social, and affective characteristics of young children and school aged students with special needs,including giftedness. Attention will be given to cultural, linguistic, and societal factors involved in identification, placement, and academic and behavioral performance of students. Focus will be placed on curriculum-based assessment and collaboration with other professionals and parents. Field experiences in a variety of school and community settings will be explored.
Note: Mandated Autism workshop is included in course 7678.
